The rinkhals spitting cobra is an amazing snake with unique attack and defence strategies and also referred to as the ring-necked spitting cobra. It is actually not a true spitting cobra as it doesn't belong to the genus Naja (as is the case with the King cobra). Instead, it is the only species in its genus - the scientific name of this snake is Hemachatus haemachatus.
The rinkhals in this video was rescued from a farm by Petrus Bothma. Prior to its release we took some DNA samples and noticed that it quite readily spat at us and thought it would be great to share this with you.

When people think of a snake spitting venom, they often think that the snake is trying to hurt them. While the venom can cause some damage, it is instead probably one of the best and most effective types of snake defence. When venom is sprayed it effectively creates a barrier between the snake and the threat, meaning that neither gets close enough to the other for any serious conflict which may lead to death.
If you get venom in your eyes, washing it out with copious amounts of water is usually sufficient. Antibiotic eyedrops are recommended as complications from the venom in the eyes usually stem from secondary infection.
Unless one has an open wound, snake venom on the skin is not an issue.
