Puff adder males are known to engage in combat during their breeding season. They follow pheromones left by the female to seek out their potential mate. However, if more than one male picks (up to seven have been recorded) up on the scent they will often engage in a dramatic wrestling match.
Considering that they have no arms or legs, you can imagine that this is no easy task. Each male tries to smother the other with its body in an attempt to pin down the head. But the other counters this by pulling its head out. Occasionally they lock necks and violently try to flip or throw the other. At one stage in this fight, one of the males appears to have has its jaw temporarily displaced.
