Overdraft came in as a 4 month old pup on the 23rd October from Overstrand, Norfolk. He was quite ill on arrival, very dehydrated and a little underweight (18.15kg). He was suffering from pneumonia and lungworm so needed veterinary treatment and a lot of careful nursing to help him recover.
He was fed every three hours with oral rehydration solution (Lectade) via a stomach tube for the first 24hrs, was checked over by our vet and was given injectable antibiotics and pain relief.
Over the next 7 days he was fed via the tube every three hours with fish soup (liquidised mackerel and Lectade), moved on to oral antibiotics and was steamed twice daily to help him breath a little easier. We have adapted a wall paper stripper to allow the seals to have the whole of their cubicle steamed as they don't appear to like being moved into a vari kennel to be steamed. Steaming and drugs to open his airways and allow the mucous to flow a little easier helped him improve and after two weeks he had turned the corner and was beginning to look a lot better. His feeding improved, he hand fed then began to feed by himself in water as he improved.
Once he was stronger and self feeding we moved him to an intermediate pool with another seal for company.
From that pool he moved in to a deep outside pool with 6 other seals.
He was returned to the wild on the 10th of February with 5 of the seals in his pool as they all had gained enough weight and were fit enough to be released.
He was released weighing 42kg so all that mackerel had done its job and got him very healthy and ready to tackle the North Sea again.
It is always good to see them go back to sea and know we are giving them a second chance.
